Xigaze, meaning "the best manor" in the language of Tibet, has historically been Tibet's political, religious and cultural center. The region of Xigaze is on the border of southwest China and covers an area of 182,000 square kilometers. Its average altitude is over 4,000 meters above sea level. It comprises the city of Xigaze, 17 counties, one port and 203 villages.

At the end of 2005, the population of the Xigaze region was around 660,000 people, more than 650,000 of which were ethnic Tibetan.

In addition to being rich in natural resources, the Xigaze prefecture is also a popular tourist destination because of its vacinity to Mount Qomolangma -- the highest peak in the world -- and its many famous monasteries. Palkhor Monastery, known its magnificent pagodas, and Sakya Monastery, known for Lakhang Chenmo hall and its 40 large pillars, are well worth a visit.
